Sleep Sonar records your night from the nightstand. It listens for snoring and sleep talk, and follows your breathing with a sonar you can't hear, even if you make no sound. Everything is worked out on your iPhone. There is no account, nothing is uploaded, and the only audio it keeps are short clips of the sounds it recognised.
Sleep Sonar in 25 seconds
How much you snore
Every night's report shows the minutes of snoring, the number of sleep-talk moments and the sounds in between, on one timeline. Drag a finger across it to see any moment.
Hear it back
Each snore, each bit of sleep talk and each cough is kept as a short clip, from three seconds before to two seconds after, so you can play it in the morning.
Breathing by sonar
The phone plays a sweep between 18 and 20 kHz, above what adults can hear, and reads its echo from your chest. That gives your breathing rate all night, whether or not you snore.
Restless or asleep
The sonar also sees when you turn over or get up, so the report shows your restless minutes and an estimate of how long you slept.
Apple Health, if you want
Turn on Save to Apple Health and each night's time in bed, sleep estimate and breathing rate go into the Health app on your iPhone. The app never reads anything from Health.
Breathing pauses
Stretches of ten seconds or more without a breath while you lie still are listed for your information. Sleep Sonar is not a medical device and does not diagnose sleep apnea.
A placement check
Lie down and breathe for 15 seconds: the app says whether it can find your breathing, how far away you are, and what to change if not.
A bedside clock on iPhone Duo
Stand the phone half open on the nightstand. Folded into a tent, the cover screen becomes a large, dim clock with your breathing rate under it; set like a laptop, the clock takes the upright half and the night's details the flat half. The screen stays on, the clock drifts a little each minute to spare the display, and a tap dims it further.
Questions and answers
Can my iPhone tell me whether I snore?
Yes. Put the phone on the nightstand and start the night. Sleep Sonar listens all night and keeps a short clip of each snore, each bit of sleep talk and each cough, with the time it happened. In the morning you see how long you snored and can play the clips. Sleep Sonar is coming soon to the App Store.
Does it work if I don't snore?
Yes. Besides listening, the phone plays a sweep between 18 and 20 kHz, too high for adults to hear, and reads its echo from your chest. That shows your breathing rate, how restless you were and an estimate of how long you slept, whether or not you make a sound.
Does it work with Apple Health?
Yes, if you want it to. Turn on Save to Apple Health on the home screen and each night is added to the Health app on your iPhone: the time in bed, the sleep estimate as time asleep and awake, and your breathing rate minute by minute. Older nights can be added one at a time from their report. The app never reads anything from Health.
Does it record me all night?
No. The sound is analysed as it happens and discarded. The app keeps only short clips of the sounds it recognises, from three seconds before to two seconds after each one. Everything stays on your iPhone: there is no account and nothing is uploaded.
Can I hear the sonar? Can my dog?
Adults can't hear it: it sits between 18 and 20 kHz. Some dogs and cats can, so if a pet reacts, turn the sonar off on the home screen. The sound detection keeps working without it.
Where should the phone go?
On the nightstand on your side of the bed, an arm's length from your chest (30 to 70 cm), face up with the bottom edge toward you, about mattress height, plugged in, with the volume at least halfway up. The placement check tells you within 15 seconds whether it can find your breathing.
Does it detect sleep apnea?
No. Sleep Sonar is not a medical device. It can show stretches of ten seconds or more without a breath while you lie still, for your information, but it cannot diagnose sleep apnea or anything else. If you see many pauses on most nights, or someone has noticed you stop breathing in your sleep, talk to a doctor.
Does Sleep Sonar upload anything?
No. Sleep Sonar makes no network connections. The sonar, the sound recognition and every report run on your iPhone, and deleting the app deletes everything it saved. Privacy policy.
